Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh oak dresser is a regional piece of country storage furniture featuring a low cupboard base with drawers, surmounted by an open shelving rack designed to store and display ceramic tableware. Originating in rural Wales during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these pieces served as central functional elements in farmhouses and country residences.

Eighteenth-century dressers were predominantly constructed from locally sourced English or Welsh oak using traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails, and wooden peg fixings. The backboards were frequently made of pine or oak tongue-and-groove boards, accompanied by hand-cast brass handles.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular dovetail joints, hand-forged iron fixings, and natural shrinkage across wide wood panels over time. Regional indicators include distinctive scalloped friezes, open-backed racks, and raised arch-panel cupboard doors characteristic of Welsh regional makers.

An antique oak dresser functions as a focal point in contemporary kitchens, dining rooms, or open-plan spaces when set against neutral backdrops. Modern ceramic tableware or monochromatic ironstone displayed on the upper shelves creates a clean contrast against the dark patinated oak wood.

Preserve oak timber by applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain hydration and protect the surface patina. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent timber splitting, warping, or colour fading.
