Rare Victorian Silver Scissors With Matching Case, Chatelaine Chain

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A very rare and unusual pair of Victorian silver scissors in a purpose made solid silver case, all on a chatelaine chain.  The scissors are beautifully designed with silver handle and steel blades.  Full hallmarks are visible to the top half for the London Assay Office with a date mark for 1879, Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling and the maker''s mark for the silversmith:  Henry William Dee. The silver case in which the scissors fit, is a matching design and acts as a scabbard, also fully hallmarked with the same marks.  Both the scissors and scabbard are attached to a silver chain, with a loop at the top for attachment.  The scabbard is engraved on two sides:  ''Thornhill & Co.,  144. New Bond St'' and ''L.F, Roundell. 57 Warwick Road''.  (Thornhill & Co were at that time Cutlers to the Queen and records show Laura F Roundell lived at 57 Warwick Road).
