An unusual Arts and Crafts brass chamberstick by the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. A repousse design of leaves and with an unusual rivetted handle. Stamped KSIA and JB – John Birkett who was a Keswick jeweller who taught metalwork at the School from 1896. It has a small holder on the handle probably for a matchstick. English c 1898.
The KSIA was established in the Lake District in 1884 by Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley and his wife Edith and ran for 100 years until 1984. Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley (1851-1920) was the vicar of Crosthwaite Church, a Canon of Carlisle and a founder member of The National Trust.
