Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pietra dura, meaning hard stone in Italian, is an art form originating in 16th-century Florence. In the 19th century, travellers on the Grand Tour purchased pietra dura plaques and jewellery featuring botanical motifs as souvenirs of their travels across Italy.

Traditional pietra dura uses a base plate of black marble or Belgian black limestone. Artisans carefully cut and hand-fit semi-precious stones, such as lapis lazuli, malachite, agate, jasper, and turquoise, into carved recesses to create microscopic seamless pictures.

Authentic period pieces feature smooth, hand-cut stone joins with minimal gaps or filler visible under magnification. The reverse side often shows natural slate, marble, or metal backings, and the metal mountings typically feature period-appropriate gold or silver hallmarks.

When not worn, small antique jewellery pieces like pietra dura pendants can be displayed under glass cloches, mounted inside fabric-lined shadow boxes, or draped over antique brass stands atop a dressing table or bookshelf.

Clean pietra dura gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre towel without harsh chemical cleaners or ultrasonic baths. Avoid immersing the piece in water, as moisture can weaken the traditional organic adhesives holding the stone inlays in place.
