Unusual Silver Slide Opening Vesta Case London 1871

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

An unusual Vesta Case with a slide opening lid and internal striker. The pattern surrounding the case is engine turned, however, this has been worn (probably through being placed in a pocket), however, this does not detract from the appearance of this rare item. The slide opening lid pushes forward to allow opening, where a gilt finish is visible. Under the lid is the striker for lighting the matches. In the base of the interior are the hallmarks for the London Assay office 1871, along with the Lion Passant and silver maker''s mark: Wright & Davies. Partial marks are also visible on the inside lid. There is also a lightly engraved message which reads '' Leuchars 28 & 39 Piccadilly''.

(Interestingly, Leuchars were maker''s of antique boxes with a Royal Warrant and sold the business to Aspray in 1888).

An interesting and collectable item in very good condition (as mentioned some wear to the pattern and slight surface scratching commensurate with age and use)...
