The Silver Squirrel has dated this piece to the 1900s.
The base bears the name Benno Von Massow who was a Prussian Lieutenant General seeing active service throughout the 19th century - see below (it may refer to his son, also called Benno and also a Lieutenant General). It is in superb condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs. It measures approx. 3.25 inches (8.3cms) tall by 2.25 inches (5.7cms) across the rim and weighs 88 grams. A very interesting piece.
origin
He came from the noble family von Massow , who had immigrated to Pomerania , and was a son of Friedrich von Massow (1786-1859) and his wife Karoline, née von Sydow (1775-1848). His father was a Prussian Major a. D. and Herr auf Schmarse (Schmarse manor, Züllichau-Schwiebus district ). His brother Hermann (1812-1881) became a politician and chief forester at the Prussian court, the other brother Wilhelm (1815-1899) later rose to become a Prussian infantry general .
military career
Massow graduated from high school in his hometown and joined the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on July 21, 1845 . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on September 12, 1848 . In the course of his military career, Massow took part in the war against Austria in 1866 and in the war against France in 1870/71 . From December 11, 1877 to December 5, 1883 he was commander of the 3rd Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 50 and was then promoted to Major General to commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigadeappointed. Massow was relieved of this command on May 13, 1887 and given the character of a lieutenant general with a pension .
After his death he was buried in the new cemetery of the parish of Kötzschenbroda . His wife, who died in Kipsdorf in 1909, was also transferred to Kötzschenbroda and buried there.
awards
On September 23, 1884, Massov was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle II class with oak leaves and swords on the ring. He was also the holder of the Order of the Crown 2nd Class, Commander 2nd Class of the Ducal Saxe-Ernestine House Order and bearer of the Cross of Honor 1st Class with Swords of the House Order of Lippe . He received the Prussian Service Cross of Merit , the Lippe Military Medal of Merit and the Iron Cross II Class.
