Description

Saphiret is an antique glass which was created by adding genuine gold to molten blue glass. Held up to the light, it morphs from a mocha/pink colour to a luminous blue glow - once seen never forgotten! Production of saphiret ended at the beginning of the last century when the price of gold rose and the glass became too expensive to produce so there's not a lot of it around. Genuine old saphiret is usually found in non-precious metal settings as, being glass, it was considered costume jewellery in the 19th century.

This pretty antique stick pin (or scarf pin/lapel pin/tie pin/cravat pin) features a high-domed saphiret cabochon framed in a halo of sparkling old-cut pastes atop a metal pin with a centre twist to help keep it in place.

The piece is in very good antique condition, with some wear to the back of the terminal.

Size: 5.7 x 1cm.

Weight: 1.9g.

Saphiret is a rare type of vintage glass created in the 19th century, traditionally crafted by adding real gold to molten glass, which yields a distinct colour-changing effect shifting between cocoa brown and blue.

Victorian stick pins frequently utilized metals such as gold, silver, or gilt brass, paired with gemstones, seed pearls, foiled glass, or paste stones set into decorative terminal heads.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand-cut foiled stones, closed-back settings, traditional pin stems lacking safety catches, and natural metal oxidisation consistent with age.

These versatile accessories can be worn secured to lapels, cravats, hats, or knitwear, or displayed in collection frames as miniature works of decorative art.

Historic jewellery should be stored individually in padded boxes away from direct sunlight, kept dry, and cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth to protect fragile foil backings and delicate settings.
