This late 19th-century Grand Tour style sculpture depicts Bacchus as a classical athletic figure standing in a dynamic contrapposto stance. The piece consists of a cast bronze figure with a green patinated antiqued finish, mounted securely upon a rectangular rough-cut stone plinth base. Visible details include the figure holding a wine skin in his left hand, short curly hair, and musculature characteristic of classical statuary. The sculpture measures 57 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. Positioned upon a mantelpiece or within a gentleman's library, the decorative bronze brings classical academic style to interior settings. The textured stone base displays natural weathering and tooling marks around the perimeter. The stable construction allows the object to sit securely on flat display surfaces, while the dark metallic surface reflects ambient light differently across the contours of the body and limbs.

Grand Tour bronzes are small-scale replica sculptures of ancient Greek and Roman originals, purchased by affluent European travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries as souvenirs of their cultural tours.

These sculptures were cast in bronze, often utilising lost-wax casting techniques, and finished with chemical patinas before being mounted onto marble, porphyry, or stone bases.

Authentic period bronzes display precise hand-chasing, subtle wear on high points, hand-turned threaded fixing rods beneath the base, and naturally aged oxidation or verdigris patination.

Classical bronzes serve as focal points on mahogany sideboards, open bookshelves, or stone mantelpieces, providing historic narrative and textural contrast within contemporary or traditional rooms.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and avoid water, liquid detergents, or abrasive polishes which can strip the historic patination and cause uneven surface oxidisation.
