A very good quality 19th century patinated bronze figure featuring the satyr Marsyas playing the flute. He is standing against a column, partially covered with his own skin, which refers to Apollo's punishment. French School.

In Greek mythology, the satyr Marsyas is a central figure in two stories involving death: in one, he picked up the double oboe that had been abandoned by Athena and played it; in the other, he challenged Apollo to a contest of music and lost his hide and life. In the contest between Apollo and Marsyas, the terms stated that the winner could treat the defeated party any way he wanted. Since the contest was judged by the Muses, Marsyas naturally lost and was flayed alive in a cave near Celaenae for his hubris to Challenge a god. Apollo then nailed Marsyas' skin to a pine tree, circa 1860

During the 19th century, European interest in classical antiquity flourished due to the Grand Tour, leading foundries to produce cast bronze replicas of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, such as mythological fauns and deities.

These statues were traditionally cast in copper-alloy bronze using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting technique, finished with hand-chasing and chemical patination to achieve dark surface tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy weight, hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate patination wear on high points, and cool-to-the-touch metal properties rather than lightweight spelter or cold-cast resin alternatives.

A figural bronze statue can be placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk, juxtaposed against clean contemporary lines to provide architectural contrast and texture.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, and occasionally apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the patina from oxidisation and humidity.
