This late 19th-century Grand Tour Classical bronze sculpture depicts the nude figure of 'The Dancing Faun' after the antique, styled in the manner of a gentleman's library ornament. Cast in dark brown patinated bronze with a rich finish, the piece shows the subject with curly hair, small horns, and a small goat's tail, standing beside a textured tree stump support. The figure bends forward holding cymbals in each hand, with his right foot resting on a foot bellows kroupezion attached to his sandal, all mounted upon a circular base bearing the stamp of sculptor Issak Duchemin. The bronze measures 58 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Positioned on a mantelpiece, this sculpture integrates easily into traditional home interiors as a decorative display piece. The detailed casting highlights the musculature of the dancer and the organic texture of the tree trunk support below. The flat circular base provides stable placement for surface display on furniture tops or display shelves within a study or living area.

Grand Tour bronzes are scale reproductions of famous Classical Greek and Roman sculptures created during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They were acquired by European aristocrats and scholars as souvenir keepsakes while travelling across cultural hubs such as Rome, Naples, and Florence.

These sculptures were typically produced using lost-wax or sand casting techniques using alloyed copper and tin. Once cast, artisans hand-chased surface details and applied chemical patination techniques to produce uniform dark brown, black, or olive surface tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit refined surface chasing, crisp muscular anatomical details, and natural wear to raised areas of the patina. Inspecting the base for incised foundry marks, maker stamps, or classic French and Italian reduction stamps can help establish age and manufacture.

Classical bronzes serve as strong grounding accents on mahogany desks, stone fireplace mantels, or within curated library shelving. Their dark patinated tones contrast effectively against pale backdrops, linen textiles, or rich timber furniture.

Maintain the finish by light dusting using a soft-bristled brush or dry microfibre cloth. To protect the patination from oxidisation, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently once dry, avoiding liquid solvents or abrasive polishes.
