This rosewood bookcase is a fine example of early 19th Century design and cabinet making. So much so, that it is still just as desirable as it was in the 1830s when it was first fashioned from well-chosen raw materials. Possibly, more so, as over the last 200 years, the natural oils within the rosewood have receded, leaving an appealing array of inviting mellow tones, and a surface colour that is highly sought after by antique dealers and interior designers alike. Another reason this bookcase remains on the list of desirable antiques is that it works within a period or contemporary setting. Apart from its understated design, and obvious capacity to house a large number of books and decorative objects on its adjustable shelves, it is also low and wide enough for the owner or decorator to use it as a basis for a larger decorative scheme. Paintings, mirrors and a broad range of other works of art, of all ages, sit comfortably on and above this piece.
