Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

French wall sconces originated as functional candleholders in royal palaces and chateaux, evolving through various decorative movements including Louis XIV, Rococo, and Empire styles to provide both illumination and ornate wall decoration.

Traditional sconces were predominantly crafted from cast bronze, brass, or ormolu, often utilizing lost-wax casting techniques followed by hand-chasing and gilding to achieve intricate surface detail.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidation, hand-tooled finishing marks on the reverse, heavier metal weight, and historically appropriate mounting fixtures rather than modern screwheads.

Pairing ornate metallic sconces with clean architectural lines creates a striking contrast, often mounting them flanking a fireplace, mirror, or artwork to introduce warmth and layered ambient lighting.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can strip away the original patina and historic finish.
