An Early 19th Century Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase

19th century
Description

Having spent a good deal of it's life at Crowe Hall, the Georgian Villa near Bath, the home until recently of Sir John Barrett, this stunning early 19th century mahogany bookcase is now in search of another appreciative owner. The domed top has an interesting cornice with inverted finial decoration while the glazing bars have a beautiful gothic tracery pattern, behind which are adjustable shelves. The secretaire section has twelve pigeon-holes and eight small drawers, each veneered in satinwood with ivory turned knobs and a green leathered writing surface. Below this there are two cross-banded and inlaid cupboard doors which open onto further useful storage with fixed shelving. Standing on arched and shaped feet, this bookcase is in superb condition with a beautiful mellow mahogany colour and is a rare form of the genre which will probably not come our way again.

If you are interested in this item, it is wise to enquire straight away. Listed items are advertised elsewhere and are constantly being sold and withdrawn from the site.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
