Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured, crackled earthenware glaze decorated with enamels and gilding. While production began in the late 16th century, the pieces most commonly found on the antique market date from the Meiji period (18681912), when production expanded significantly for export to Western markets.

Satsuma ceramics are traditionally crafted from a clay body covered with a clear or cream-coloured glaze that develops a fine network of crackles (known as crazing). Artisans then apply detailed polychrome enamels and raised gold (moriage) by hand, often depicting figural scenes, landscapes, or nature motifs.

Authentic antique Satsuma pieces typically feature hand-painted details with a fine, uniform crackle glaze under the surface layer. Many pieces bear maker marks or signatures on the base, usually written in Japanese characters, denoting the kiln, artist, or Shimazu family mon.

Antique plates bring historical depth and intricate texture to modern interiors when displayed thoughtfully on walls using plate hangers or mounted securely on stands within open shelving. They contrast effectively against neutral, minimalist backdrops to highlight their detailed palette and craftsmanship.

Antique pottery should be cleaned exclusively with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, avoiding water immersion, harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners which can damage the delicate enamel and gold leaf. Pieces should be displayed away from direct sunlight and areas prone to high humidity or rapid temperature fluctuations.
