Antique Ziegler-mahal Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A glorious palette of colours, with pale greens, light blues and off white tones, on a rich deep red background this antique Ziegler-Mahal carpet, is an extremely handsome decorative carpet.  With a fine weave and beautifully executed all over flowing entwined leaf and flower design.  Classical in its form and design, an ideal carpet for a drawing room, study, bedroom or entrance hall.  Condition is exemplary, with a soft wool pile all over.  Woven around 1900-1910, these antique carpets were hand-made to last, using the best wool and natural dyes.  Supplied with our sturdy underlay.

Ziegler-Mahal's are called as such, because the Ziegler workshop produced carpets from their own looms with their own designs.  Using traditional Persian patterns consisting of small palmettes, floral rosettes and leaves, these were soon commissioned in grand sizes for the Western market and the designs, in particular the palmettes, were blown up to large proportions.  Often these Ziegler-Mahal's can be considered earlier productions from the workshop, before designs were scaled up and large 5 x 4 metre examples were produced.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ziegler-Mahal carpets were commissioned in Persia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co., specifically tailored with large-scale motifs and balanced colour palettes for Western interiors.

These carpets are hand-knotted using local wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, employing traditional asymmetric Persian knots and natural vegetable dyes.

Genuine antique examples display characteristic abrash colour variations, a supple handle, natural dye mellowing, an all-over repeating floral motif without a rigid central medallion, and an asymmetrical knot structure visible on the underside.

Designers often position these deep red and navy carpets as grounding elements in traditional living rooms or juxtapose them against contemporary minimalist furniture to introduce texture, warmth, and historical depth.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar, rotate the carpet annually to distribute foot traffic evenly, and utilise professional rug cleaners specialising in antique hand-woven textiles.
