Antique Tabriz Rug

19th century
Description

A beautiful pale antique Tabriz rug with a glorious subtle palette, the design has been executed with refinement by the weaver.  Woven in the late 19th century, with delicate corner spandrels and a gentle leaf and flower border around the refined central medallion. The muted colours have ancient wonderful abrash (dye change) adding great character to this piece.  Gentle yellows, teal greens and the softest pinks can be seen, a really lovely variety of dyes.  Woven over 130 years ago it is in very good condition with a fine pile.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from Tabriz, one of the oldest rug-weaving centres in northwestern Iran, these carpets are celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship, intricate central medallions, and varied palette ranging from soft cream tones to deep blues.

Authentic Tabriz rugs are typically hand-knotted using high-quality wool pile woven onto a strong cotton or silk foundation, utilising precise symmetrical or asymmetrical knots to create refined floral patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinct hand-knotting irregularities on the underside, natural dye variations known as abrash, and a high knot count visible through the clarity of the design on the back of the rug.

A detailed Persian rug serves as an anchor in contemporary settings, providing warmth and texture beneath neutral modern furniture or contrasting effectively against polished wood and metal accents.

Preserve the pile by vacuuming regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and seek professional specialist cleaning when required.
