Antique Tabriz Carpet

19th century
Description

With gorgeous natural colours and a beautifully drawn medallion design, this is a stunning classical antique Tabriz from the late 19th century.  The weave is very fine and the detail is remarkable.  An extremely elegant antique carpet, the subtle gold yellow tones compliment the warm red, pink dyes.  Woven around 1890-1900 in the north of Persia in the city of Tabriz.  In good condition throughout with a soft pile and mainly all in place, with only minimal low areas of wear. No major areas have been restored, just minimal preservation to the ends/fringes and sides.  It has been professionally washed by ourselves and it is ready to be shown in situ or shipped throughout the UK or Europe.

Purchase this attractive antique Tabriz carpet and we can ship it straight to your home or office with our trusted couriers. Included in the price is our excellent rug underlay which adds durability to any antique carpet or rug preventing them from moving around on any floor type.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique Tabriz carpet originates from late 19th-century Persia in the city of Tabriz. Hand-knotted from wool and cotton, the piece displays terracotta red, navy blue, gold yellow, and pink dyes across its soft pile. The design incorporates a lobed central medallion on the red field, accompanied by navy blue corner spandrels, intricate floral arabesques, and a multi-band border with fringed ends at the top and bottom. Minimal low areas of wear appear across the surface, along with preservation work to the sides and ends. The floor covering measures 404 cm high, 285 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. The piece suits placement within a reception room, drawing room, or study of an English Country House styled interior.

FAQs

Originating from the historic weaving centre of Tabriz in northwestern Iran, these carpets are recognised for their precise knotting, ornate floral motifs, central medallions, and balanced classical compositions.

Tabriz rugs are hand-knotted using finely spun wool or silk pile woven over a strong cotton or silk foundation warp and weft structure.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction, natural vegetable dye variations known as abrash, symmetrical or asymmetrical knots visible on the reverse, and precise floral or geometric detailing.

Positioning a patterned Persian carpet under modern minimalist or traditional wooden furniture creates visual anchor points, introducing rich colour contrasts and textual warmth.

Suction-vacuum regularly without using a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to balance foot traffic exposure, and engage professional textile conservators for periodic deep cleaning.
