Woven by the talented weavers of Kerman in south-east Persia in the last quarter of the 19th century, this beautiful large carpet has grandeur and style. The repeat ornament within the lozenges is almost heraldic, while the colours are rich and luxuriant. Kerman was a major centre of court carpet weaving during the Safavid period, and some of the greatest carpets ever made came out of these workshops. This carpet exemplifies the tradition. One can imagine it enhancing a spectacular drawing room, library or even a public space such as a grand lobby or banqueting hall. The pile is good and the wool is soft and velvety. It is clean and ready for immediate use.
