Antique Ziegler Rug

19th century
Description

A rare ivory Antique Ziegler rug in a rare small size, as most Ziegler & Co workshop carpets were produced in large sizes for drawing rooms.  In excellent condition with a high wool pile throughout, it has beautiful soft colours, gentle pinks, teal blue greys. It is very rare to find such a small rug from the Ziegler workshop as generally they made larger carpets.

Please request a home visit to choose a preferred day and time for us to visit you.  We can also deliver this rug to your home for you to trial at your leisure and ship worldwide.

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and  Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ziegler rugs originated in the late nineteenth century when the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. established workshops in Sultanabad, Persia. Designed specifically for Western markets, these carpets feature oversized floral patterns and muted colour palettes tailored to European interiors.

Traditional Ziegler carpets are hand-knotted using natural hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool was historically dyed using vegetable-based dyes to create soft, muted colourways.

Authentic Ziegler rugs are identified by their hand-knotted weave, soft colour variations from natural dyes, and distinctive large-scale floral patterns on cream or ivory fields. Examining the underside reveals slight structural irregularities characteristic of artisan handcrafting.

A Ziegler rug acts as a neutral foundation due to its soft tone and understated floral motifs. Place it in a living area or dining space under neutral upholstered furniture to add texture and subtle colour without overwhelming contemporary decor.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment to avoid damaging the hand-knotted pile. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, damp cloth, and schedule professional cleaning by a specialist rug restorer every few years.
