Rare Antique Tabriz Rug

19th century
Description

An early rare and very beautiful early antique Tabriz rug with a glorious subtle palette, the design has been  executed with refinement by the expert weaver.  Woven in the late 19th century, around 1870-1880 with intricate corner spandrels and a sublime refined central medallion. The palette of colours with muted greens, blues and subtle pinks makes for an exquisite rare size Tabriz.  Rarely do we find rugs from the city of Tabriz in a 9 x 6 feet size, as they did not produce this size often.

An ancient look and feel with some lower areas of pile, but for its age of 150 plus years, it is still a very durable, collectable rug.  With underlay supplied by ourselves this further aids its strength, adding body to the rug on a floor.

Request a home visit to try this beautiful rare antique Tabriz rug in situ, we love to travel all over the UK showing  our carpets and rugs in customers homes.  Our professional home visit service is a free, no obligation service we have offered for 30 years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tabriz rugs originate from the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran, one of the oldest rug-weaving centres in the region. Renowned for their extraordinary craftsmanship, these rugs historically catered to royal courts and are famous for their detailed medallion designs and refined floral compositions.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using high-grade wool pile spun onto a durable cotton or silk warp and weft foundation. Natural plant and mineral dyes are traditionally employed to achieve rich terracotta, indigo, and ivory colour palettes.

Authentic Tabriz rugs can be identified by their fine knot density, symmetrical Persian weave, and precise geometrical precision in the execution of complex motifs. Slight natural colour variations, known as abrash, also indicate hand-dyed wool and age.

A Persian Tabriz rug is often used as an anchoring element in living rooms or dining halls, where its rich pattern contrasts with clean-lined contemporary furniture. The intricate colours pull together tonal accents in upholstery, drapery, and artwork.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar prevents dirt from settling into the pile. Rotating the rug annually ensures even wear and light exposure, while professional specialist rug cleaning is recommended every few years to maintain fibre integrity.
