Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinoiserie bureau bookcases originated in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, reflecting Europes fascination with East Asian art and motifs. European cabinetmakers developed techniques known as japanning to imitate oriental lacquerware on traditional furniture forms like writing bureaux and cabinets.

These pieces typically utilized softwood or oak carcases covered with layers of shellac-based varnish, gesso, and pigments to create a smooth surface. Decorative scenes were painted using raised plasterwork, gilding, and metal powders to mimic authentic Asian lacquer.

Authentic period pieces show age-appropriate craquelure or fine cracking in the lacquer finish, hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, and hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware. The timber underneath often exhibits natural shrinkage and tool marks consistent with historic manufacturing.

A Chinoiserie bureau bookcase functions as a focal focal point in a living area, study, or hallway. Positioning the piece against neutral or deeply saturated wall colours allows the gilded detailed artwork to stand out while balancing contemporary and period elements.

Keep lacquered furniture away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent cracking or lifting of the finish. Dust gently with a soft dry microfiber cloth, avoiding water, commercial sprays, or abrasive polishes that can degrade historic gilding.
