The Silver Squirrel has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The compass works perfectly. The hinge and loop are possibly gold, the loop needs work as it can be detached if pulled hard enough and I think the case should spring open when the button is pushed but it does not. It measures approx. 1.25 inches (3cms) across and weighs 26 grams. A rare piece.
