Superb Unusual Victorian Tubular Silver Box With 1797 Penny Decoration

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A superb and very unusual silver box.  The box is in tubular form, possible used for holding cigarettes or trinkets.  It stands on four ball feet and has a hinged lid which opens and closes perfectly;  here is the only decorative engraving, which is a crest of a Coronet for either an Earl or Countess.  At each end of the box, pennies are set, both dated 1797.   Hallmarks are visible on the outside of the lid and also clearly visible on the inside when the lid is opened, for London 1899, along with the maker''s mark:  Andrew Barrett & Sons.  A wonderfully deep golden gilt finish is revealed to the inside.  The underneath of the box also bears the stamp for ''Andrew Barrett & Sons 63 & 64 Piccadilly London''.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase an unusual item of silver which is beautifully designed and crafted (probably  exclusively commissioned by an Earl or Countess). In super condition. Fabulous for a collector!
