Pocket hip flasks evolved from medieval containers used to carry water or spirits, becoming particularly popular in their current curved form during the 18th and 19th centuries for personal use during travel and outdoor pursuits.

Traditional flasks were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, pewter, or stainless steel, often featuring captive caps, leather wraps, or glass bodies encased in metal mesh.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining the metal hallmarks stamped on the body, which indicate the assay office, metal purity, and date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

An antique silver flask can be displayed as an object of curiosity on a bar cart, bookshelf, or sideboard, adding a touch of metallic sheen and historical character to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique silver by gently cleaning it with a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth only when necessary, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip historical oxidisation and hallmarks.
