Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Qing dynasty, Cantonese craftspeople produced high-grade hardwood furniture tailored specifically for Western traders and export markets. These pieces combined traditional Chinese motifs, such as dragons and flora, with European functional forms like pedestal desks and bureau cabinets.

These desks were typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as hongmu, zitan, or rosewood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. Craftsmanship involved floating panel construction to accommodate timber movement, combined with extensive hand-carving along crestings and leg aprons.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved details with subtle tool marks, natural shrinkage along timber joints, and dense, heavy hardwoods. They generally lack modern metal screws, modern synthetic glues, or machine-cut precision in the internal drawer linings.

A heavily carved dark hardwood desk serves as a focal piece when placed against neutral wall tones or unadorned plaster surfaces. Pairing dark timber furniture with contemporary lighting and streamlined upholstered chairs creates a balanced contrast between ornate historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the hardwood from splitting or warping. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and direct sunlight exposure.
