Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian period Davenport desk originates from 1850 and adopts a traditional gentleman's library style. Constructed from walnut with an original polished finish, the piece displays a warm brown timber colour throughout all four sides. It has a slanted writing slope inset with green leather, paired with bold front carved cabriole legs ending in turned feet and fitted with small round wooden knobs on the side drawers. Practical components include a lift-up top to reveal internal storage space and rear small opening storage drawers, alongside outer side-opening storage drawers and an upper pull-out pencil tray. The desk measures 84 cm high, 53.5 cm wide and 66 cm deep, making it a compact work station suited for a home study or a quiet writing corner.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk named after Captain Davenport, who commissioned the original design in the late eighteenth century. It features a slanted writing surface, often lined with leather, sitting above a small chest of drawers that opens from the side.

Victorian Davenport desks were typically constructed using solid woods and fine veneers such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Writing surfaces were commonly inlaid with gold-tooled leather, while drawer pulls were carved from matching timber or cast in brass.

Authentic nineteenth-century Davenport desks feature hand-cut dovetail joints on side drawers, original brass castors beneath the plinth base, and decorative hand-carved supports or columns framing the front kneehole area.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk works well in a hallway alcove, bedroom corner, or dedicated study. It serves as a decorative functional station for stationary, laptops, or curated display objects.

Dust the timber regular using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture exposure to protect both the natural walnut finish and the leather writing inset.
