Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
When the lid is removed the underside and the interior of the jar are a fabulous golden gilt finish.

Hallmarks are visible on the base for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1901, Lion Passant and silver maker's mark: Henry Matthews. Partial hallmarks are also visible on the lip of the lid.

A stunning item of silverware. The quality of the craftmanship is evident, and the style encompasses all from 'The beautiful age'.
The jar is also very nicely proportioned, being 8.9 cm high and 8.1 cm diameter width (at widest part). As well as being fabulous for display is very practical and useful.
