This nineteenth-century Louis XV revival standing lectern takes the form of a French Rococo piece fashioned from warm brown kingwood. The structure incorporates a hinged shaped top inset with a dark grey leather writing surface, complemented by two lower open parquetry shelves and supported on four cabriole legs. Gilt bronze ormolu mounts adorn the upper corners and frame the silhouette, while scrolling ormolu sabots cap each foot. A central gilt metal escutcheon decorates the frieze beneath the slant. Measuring 123 cm high by 77 cm wide and 57 cm deep, this refined item serves as an elegant writing stand, a display pulpit, or a decorative furniture accent in a reception room, study, or hallway. Its compact footprint and open shelving allow for both functional use and the exhibition of books or decorative objects within a traditional interior space.

Lecterns and standing desks of this form originated in 18th-century France during the Louis XV period. Designed for reading, writing, or holding ledgers while standing, they were traditionally crafted for private libraries and salons, combining functional utility with decorative cabinetmaking.

These pieces feature a solid timber frame veneered with kingwood or rosewood parquetry. Decorative elements include cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts on the knees and feet, alongside an inset leather writing slope on the angled top.

Authentic pieces feature finely hand-chased mercury-gilt bronze mounts fixed with original steel or brass screws. The parquetry veneer exhibits tight book-matched geometric patterning, showing subtle natural variation in wood grain and patina.

A standing lectern functions well as an occasional desk in a home office or library nook. It can also serve as a display stand for large art books, guest registers, or decorative folios in a hallway.

Maintain the wood by applying a neutral beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, avoiding silicone sprays. Gilt bronze mounts should be dusted gently with a soft brush, keeping harsh metal polishes away to protect the original gilding.
