A pair of Victorian Renaissance Revival decorative ewers from the 19th century, made from bronze with a warm bronze finish. Each ewer stands upright on a square pedestal base with a stepped, turned foot and rope-moulded detail, rising through a bulbous body decorated with high relief figures including mythological images, winged females, two large crabs, and two rams. The spirally fluted neck terminates in a ruffled lip, fitted with an arched scrolling handle shaped as a long clawed arm originating from a horned and bearded face at the top. The vessels measure 29 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. Displayed as a balanced pair on a mantelpiece, these ewers bring a classical architectural presence to an interior setting. They suit traditional living spaces, studies, or libraries as ornamental mantelpiece objects, catching the light across their detailed relief surfaces.

Decorative ewers based on classical Greco-Roman and Renaissance models gained significant popularity during the 19th century. Manufactured as display objects rather than functional water jugs, they reflected the Victorian fascination with antiquity, archaeology, and revived historical styles.

Victorian bronze ewers were typically produced using lost-wax casting or sand casting techniques. The cast components, including the body, handle, and base, were assembled, hand-chased to refine surface detail, and finished with patination or gilded highlights.

Authentic 19th-century bronze ewers feature heavy casting, crisp hand-chased decorative relief, and natural wear to the patina along high-contact points. Look for threaded iron or brass rod assemblies inside the base and subtle irregularities consistent with historical foundry techniques.

Antique bronze ewers function as sculptural accents when placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Their rich metallic texture contrasts effectively against minimalist backdrop materials such as marble, lime-wash plaster, or dark timber.

Dust cast bronze regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush to remove dirt from detailed reliefs. Avoid chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the patinated surface.
