18th Century Chippendale Mahogany Bookcase

18th century
Description

Superb mid 18th century George 3rd Chippendale mahogany bookcase with architectural pediment. This wonderful piece of furniture displays all the best features of mid 18th century design. The base section stands on original shaped bracket feet with two doors below two drawers. The drawers have cock beaded edges, are fully oak lined and have their original locks and swan neck brass handle. The pair of cupboard doors have an astragal moulding with carved round patera to the corners. There are two original sliding trays inside.

The top section has the typical mid 18th century astragal glazed doors which amazingly have all their original wavy glass. Above the doors we have a typical 18th century dentil cornice with superb matchinmg architectural dentil type pediment. The bookcase section is divided down the middle vertically and has fully adjustable shelves to both sides which are all original. The inside has been very well lined with high quality purple velvet of some age.

The bookcase is low waisted which makes it look very elegant.

There are one or two very minor old repairs but basically this bookcase is, as it was made.

It is a pleasing colour with good patination.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
