Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
The body of the box is a lovely plain polished silver and stands on four decorative feet. Very clear hallmarks are visible to the underneath of the box, for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1910 and Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling silver. The silver maker's mark is also clearly visible for: Henry Matthews. Partial hallmarks can also be seen on the lid lip.
When opened, a the lovely lemony gilt interior is displayed on the underside of the lid and the interior is dressed with green velvet.
The box is nicely proportioned (6.2 cm deep x 8.5 cm width x 3.8 cm height approx.) and as well as being beautifully ornamental is practical to house special trinkets!
This is a very special box, outstanding in its appearance, is unusual and rare, and in lovely antique collector's condition. The craftmanship of the silversmith is very apparent!
