These candlesticks are a 1930s pair from Belgium, designed in the Modernist Art Deco style. Each candelabrum stands 25 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, constructed from lacquered ebonised wood and chromed metal in a silver and black colourway. The design incorporates square stepped bases, central rectangular pillar construction, curved S-arms, and tubular candle sockets with small round nuts securing the metal arms to the timber pillars. Today, this matching pair finds an ideal home on a sideboard top, adding a strong geometric presence to a dining room, living area, or hallway. The chromium and the dark lacquered surfaces remain in excellent condition without visible blemishes, making the candlesticks practical for everyday use or display during dinner parties and gatherings.

FAQs

Modernist Art Deco metalwork from the 1930s emphasises geometric structure, streamlined silhouettes, and functional form. It departs from intricate floral motifs in favour of bold architectural shapes, machine-age aesthetics, and polished metallic finishes.

During the 1930s, makers frequently combined electroplated chrome or nickel with early plastics like Bakelite, painted wood, or lacquered metal. These materials offered contrast between high-shine metallic surfaces and dark, matte components.

Authentic pieces usually feature period-appropriate construction methods such as slotted metal screws, weighted bases, and hand-fitted joints. The plating may show minor natural age-related wear or light tarnish without peeling excessively.

Pair these candelabras on a sleek dining table, a minimalist sideboard top, or a marble fireplace mantelpiece. Their sculptural black and chrome profile creates a striking visual focal point against modern neutral backgrounds or bold dark walls.

Dust regularly with a dry microfiber cloth and avoid abrasive chemicals that can strip electroplated chrome. To clean Bakelite or painted surfaces, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately to prevent oxidisation or moisture damage.
