Antique East Anatolian Yuruk Prayer Rug, Superb Colour, 2nd Half 19th Century.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 6in x 2ft 96in (138 x 84cm).

Antique Eastern Anatolian Kurdish Yuruk prayer rug of classic design with outstanding colour.

2nd half 19th century.

An excellent example of a Yuruk prayer rug, with the classic bold design and intense dye colours. The wool is soft and glossy. The butterscotch coloured border frames the rug well and contrasts with the cochineal red light indigo blue field.

Superb condition with some even wear and good pile. The rug has a few scattered very small old repairs and the selvedges have been re-bound in the traditional Yuruk manner. The top end retains part of the original decorated kilim end finish.

A good collectors rug that will make an excellent display item.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Stock Number: H-276.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Yuruk rugs are hand-knotted textiles created by nomadic tribes in the mountainous regions of Anatolia, typically featuring a stepped mihrab niche design used for daily prayer.

These carpets were hand-spun using locally sourced sheep wool for both the warp and pile, coloured with natural vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted asymmetric weave variations, natural dye colour abrash, soft lanolin-rich wool, and traditional tribal iconography such as the stepped arched niche.

Small tribal rugs function well as focal accent pieces when laid on neutral hardwood floors, integrated into layered rug arrangements, or displayed as decorative wall hangings.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar, rotate periodically to balance light exposure, and rely on professional hand-washing specialists for deep cleaning.
