Art Nouveau Victorian Silver Vesta Case Birmingham 1896

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A wonderfully decorative, art nouveau, Victorian, solid silver Vesta case. The case is embellished with the very finest repousse work in an iconic art nouveau style featuring undulating waves (see images) and organic design leaves with a protruding empty cartouch to one corner. Attention to the smallest detail is evident. The hinged lid opens nicely to reveal the hallmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1896 and Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling silver. The inside of the lid is gilded and a deep golden colour. Maker''s marks are also visible for T H Hazlewood & Co. The pattern registration number is also visible on one side of the Vesta Case : 159520. There is a good fastening loop on the top of the lid.

This is a stunning and unusual Vesta. The quality of the silversmith''s work is apparent!
