Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The conical shaped snuffer bears hallmarks on one side for the London Assay Office with a date mark for 1855 and Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling. The silver maker's mark is also clearly visible for John Samuel Hunt. The handle is a beautifully carved baleen (whale bone) in a twisted design and is a deep rich brown colour.
