This nineteenth-century Grand Tour souvenir sculpture depicts the classical Greek goddess Athena Promachos, also known to the Romans as Minerva, created in Italy around 1860 during the Victorian period in a Neoclassical style. Modelled as a standing figure in gilded bronze, the subject wears a Corinthian helmet, a decorative cuirass or aegis across the chest, and heavily pleated classical drapery, holding a tall upright spear in her right hand. The metal surface displays a warm gilt gold finish with visible minor wear and rubbing to the gilding, and the entire piece is raised upon a rectangular black marble plinth base. Measuring 30 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, this sculpture is suited for display on a mantelpiece within a gentleman's library or study as part of a classical collection.

A Grand Tour bronze sculpture is a small-scale nineteenth-century replica of famous classical antiquity statues, purchased by European aristocrats during their cultural travels across Italy and Greece.

These statuettes were typically cast in bronze using the lost-wax technique, often featuring chased detailing, fire-gilding or patination, and mounted on marble or porphyry bases.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate wear to the gilding, crisp casting seams, and original threaded rod assembly beneath the plinth.

Position classical bronzes on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk to create a focal point, pairing them with leather-bound books or contemporary art for a balanced look.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or abrasive cloths that can strip the delicate gilding and historical patina.
