An unusual and rare, Victorian, solid silver Vesta case with an inner case (to hold the matches) which swings out (see images for verification). The outer case is beautifully engraved with lovely swirling patterns on one side and an empty cartouch surrounded by swirling patterns on the other side. There is a large fastening loop for attachment at the top. Hallmarks for the London Assay Office are clearly visible with a date mark for 1883 and Lion Passant indicating sterling silver. The maker''s mark for the esteemed and very collectable maker is also visible: Sampson Mordan & Co.
