Spring Loaded Silver Stamp Case Birmingham 1901

A most unusual and rare, Edwardian, solid silver stamp case. The case is in the form of a small rectangular box (deeper than the usual envelope style stamp case) and opens like a book and is hinged at the on one side. When opened, the inside has a very unusual spring loaded frame in which the stamps would sit. The style is a lovely plain polished silver on both sides. The underneath of the lid is shows the clear hallmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1901 and Lion Passant indicating sterling silver. The maker''s marks are for the renowned silversmith''s: Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings (Frank Shepherd). There is a loop attached for a fob or chatelaine.
