Edwardian Sterling Silver Hand Mirror

1900 - 1920
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is an Edwardian hallmarked sterling silver hand mirror. It was made by George Nathan & Ridley Hayesor and assayed in Chester in 1904. It is hallmarked to both the main part of the mirror, and also the part that keeps the mirrored plate in place.

The silver has allover repoussage floral decoration, and is monogrammed to the central scrolling shield. The mirrored plate itself has a bevelled edge.

There is a dent to the top of the mirror. The bevelled plate is losing its backing, especially around the edge. There is a thin crack to the silver halfway between the handle and the monogrammed crest.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian era (19011910), vanity sets crafted in sterling silver became popular accessories for dressing tables. Influenced by both late Victorian revival styles and Art Nouveau design, silversmiths frequently adorned mirror backs with elaborate floral motifs, scrollwork, and cartouches for personal engraving.

These mirrors were constructed by hammering or stamping a thin sheet of sterling silver using repousse and chasing techniques to create detailed relief patterns. The decorated silver casing was then fitted over a wooden or composition core to provide structural rigidity before securing the bevelled glass mirror plate.

Authenticity is verified through official British hallmarks stamped onto the silver casing, which typically include a lion passant for sterling purity, an assay office mark (such as Chester, Birmingham, or London), a date letter, and a makers mark.

A sterling silver hand mirror can be styled atop a dressing table, placed on a decorative tray alongside perfume bottles, or displayed on a bedroom shelf to add tactile texture and historic detail to a room scheme.

Silver mirror casings should be cleaned gently using a dedicated silver polishing cloth or a non-abrasive silver foam. The piece should never be submerged in water, as moisture can seep behind the glass, causing silvering deterioration or damaging the internal timber core.
