Rare Compass Silver Vesta Case Birmingham 1902

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A superb and very rare, early Edwardian solid silver Vesta case featuring a compass. This case is a charming shape and the front of the case has a wonderful working compass set within the centre. The lid is hinged to one side and closes nicely with a firm click! There is also a loop to one side for attachment. When opened clear hallmarks are visible on the inside lip under the lid for the Birmingham Assay Office, with a date mark for 1902 and the Lion Passant indicating sterling silver, along with the silversmith''s maker''s mark for the renowned maker Henry Matthews.

This Vesta is very tactile and feels nice to hold in the hand and is a good heavy gauge silver.

Definitely a collector''s item due to the wonderful unusual feature of a compass.

Condition: This Vesta case is in great antique condition. (There are some very minor superficial scratches to the silver commensurate with the age of the item that are mentioned for accuracy only).
