Glass Silver Mounted Tyg Cup Birmingham 1902

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A very handsome, Edwardian, heavy weight glass Tyg Cup with an attractive silver rim. Tygs were used as a means of sharing a beverage, and have three handles. The glass is beautifully designed being smooth around the surface on the outside of the Tyg and shaped into smooth subtle columns on the inside, giving the cup a most impressive appearance (almost an optical illusion)! There is a cut glass star on the base. The silver rim is simply plain polished silver with no engravings apart form the hallmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1902 and Lion Passant indicating sterling silver. The silversmith''s maker''s marks are also clearly visible for Johnson Durban & Co.

A charming and unusual item, superbly made and lovely design.

Condition: This Tyg is in great antique condition. The glass is unblemished and clear.
