Unusual Silver Stamp Case Birmingham 1898

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A most unusual and rare, Victorian, solid silver stamp case. The case is in the form of a small rectangular box (deeper than the usual envelope style stamp case) and opens like a book and is beautifully decorated on one side with a lovely floral pattern , the other side of the case is decorated similarly and has a small empty cartouch in the corner. When opened, the inside has a very unusual spring loaded frame in which the stamps would sit. The underneath of the lid is gilded and shows the clear hallmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1898 and Lion Passant indicating sterling silver. The maker''s marks are for the renowned silversmith''s Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings (Frank) Shepherd. There is a loop attached for a fob or chatelaine.
