Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian secretaire chest of drawers is an 18th-century dual-purpose item of furniture combining a storage chest with a fold-out or pull-down writing desk. Popularised during the Georgian era, these pieces featured concealed compartments, small interior drawers, and letter pigeonholes behind a hinged top drawer front.

These chests were predominantly crafted from dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, valued for its stability and rich wood grain. Hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass drop handles, cockbeaded drawer edges, and fine satinwood or ebony stringing inlays were standard construction features.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, slightly irregular dovetail jointing on drawer linings, and period-correct brass hardware. The drop-front desk section typically displays natural signs of age, including historic wear on the hinges, original lock plates, and hand-fitted interior drawers.

A Georgian secretaire functions well in a study, hallway, or living area as both a workspace and storage unit. Pairing dark mahogany timber with neutral walls, modern minimalist seating, and subtle contemporary lighting creates an effective visual contrast.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or fading of the finish. Regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and occasional application of a natural beeswax polish will protect the surface and preserve the historic patina.
