Welsh (Anglesey) Georgian Oak & Mahogany Housekeepers Kitchen Food Cupboard Bookcase Dresser Display Cabinet (Circa 1810)

19th century
Description

Here is an example of a stunning quality antique Welsh Georgian oak and mahogany glazed cupboard, circa 1810, in excellent condition, most likely originating from the Talwrn area of Anglesey, North Wales. The cupboard features a protruding oak canopy above twin dome shaped glazed cabinet doors; which open to reveal two internal fixed shelves, with the original plate beads and decoratively carved shelf fronts. The cabinet features the original hinges, working door lock and key. The cabinet interior retains its original condition; it has not been lined or painted (which is usually the case in later years). Three elegant mahogany spice drawers sit below the glass cabinet. The cock-beaded spice drawers feature faux keyholes with oak diamond shaped escutcheons.

Below, sits a sturdy oak base with a “two-over-two” drawer design (two small drawers above two larger drawers). The pine lined hand dovetailed drawers boasts geometric inlay to the drawer fronts, with oak diamond shaped escutcheons, and the original working locks (with key) but with later brassware. The drawers sit in a cock-beaded frame. The cupboard features “dot and diamond” motifs inlaid to the stiles on the glazed cabinet, and stiles to the base. The design and style of this piece is typical of vernacular furniture from the Talwrn area of Anglesey, North Wales. The base stands on its original ogee bracket oak feet; the sides of the cupboard feature inset oak panels (cupboards from this region with oak sides are deemed better quality than those with pine sides). The back of the cupboard features its original pine backboards. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy access into the house.

Condition Report:

This cupboard in is excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The cabinet features the original glass (with some old scratches/scuffs to the glass) and shelves. Importantly, the finely glazed doors are not warped in any way. The cupboard boasts oak sides (cupboards from this region with oak sides are deemed better quality than those with pine sides). The “dot and diamond” oak inlay and escutcheons is all original and intact and in excellent condition. The drawer fronts feature later brassware. All drawers are hand dovetailed, pine lined and close flush to the frame. The cupboard stands on its original ogee bracket feet. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
