Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The level of craftsmanship used in its construction is self evident and the fact that even the shelves and back boards are made from solid ash is testament to its quality. It has a decorative moulded cornice above four glazed doors with arched mouldings and beautifully hand carved corbels dividing the separate sections. The doors have working locks operated by a single key while each interior has three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a beautifully figured top with moulded edge over three mahogany lined drawers displaying the original brass handles. Beneath these can be found four cupboard doors, all with moulded edges and central raised fielded panels. The cupboards are divided by reeded carved columns while the interiors each contain a single removable shelf. The bookcase stands on a plain plinth, splits into three sections and has aged to a very rich warm shade of oak. It has a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
