William IV Mahogany Antique Secretaire Bookcase

19th century
Description

William IV Mahogany Antique Secretaire Bookcase

Dating from around 1835 during the William IV period this delightful secretaire bookcase is made from mahogany. A tapered cornice sits over two astragal glazed doors which have a brass clash mould and key with working lock. The interior of the display contains three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a rectangular moulded top above a deep secretaire drawer which contains seven maple fronted drawers, several pigeon holes and a green baize writing surface. At the base can be found a cupboard with beautifully figured doors, again with a working lock. The interior contains a single adjustable shelf. The whole piece is heavily influenced by the Gillows style, especially so with the design of the lobed feet on which it stands. It also displays the charm and character of a true antique with minor old repairs none of which detract from it being a very beautiful piece of furniture. It splits into two sections for ease of removal and the mahogany is a wonderful warm medium shade with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.

Approx. dimensions are:

Height: 227cm / 89¼"

Width: 127cm / 50"

Depth: 58cm / 23"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
