Victorian Gothic Oak Library Bookcase

19th century
Description

A very good quality late Victorian Arts & Crafts oak library bookcase in the Gothic style featuring trefoils, canted corners and planked doors and sides.

It has a moulded cornice with three trefoils to the front and two to each side. The open top has eight shelves each with gilt embossed green felt skirts above a base with two drawers and two planked cupboard doors. The shelves to the upper section are adjustable or removable and each measure 70cm wide x 25.5cm (27 ?in x 10in) deep, deeper books can be put there because of the open design). The left base drawer has built in dividers and the cupboard beneath has two adjustable full width shelves 142.5cm wide x 37.5cm deep (56 ?in x 14 ¾in).

The drawers and doors are fitted with brass handles, locks and escutcheons with brass catches to the left side door. Whilst there is no key a good lock smith should be able to cut one if taken the locks. One handle has been replaced with one of a similar design, the remaining original handles are stamped with numbers to the reverse.

Condition:

This is in very good solid condition. On the left hand side of the base there is a slight gap between boards due to shrinkage, the right hand side of the top section has some veneer middles to the lower edge where it sits on the base, there is a chip out the top right corner of the right door, light marks to the top of the base and various other minor character marks.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information or photos.

?Width: 152.5cm wide (60in/5ft)

?Depth: 44.5cm (17 ½in) ?

Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

For delivery we use a small carrier experience in carrying antique furniture. Delivery is usually within 31 days and the carrier will make arrangements with you directly. We can provide contact details of other carriers if required.
