Black dot paste refers to hand-cut lead glass gems produced during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries that feature small dots of black paint applied to the culets. This technique was used in closed-backed settings to simulate the depth and shadow of authentic open-backed diamonds under candlelight.

Georgian paste brooches were primarily crafted using silver settings, high-lead content glass cut to mimic precious gemstones, and metallic foil backings. The reverse of the setting was frequently finished in gold or silver and completely closed to protect the delicate foil layer beneath the stones.

Authentic Georgian paste items usually feature smooth, closed silver or gold backings, hand-faceted lead glass stones with small dark culet dots, and hand-fabricated collet or claw settings. Evidence of historical wear, soft patination on the silver, and non-uniform hand cuts on the paste facets also assist in authentication.

An antique paste brooch can be pinned to the lapel of a modern tailored blazer, used to fasten a silk scarf, or attached to a wide ribbon worn as a choker necklace. It can also be added to a denim jacket collar or evening clutch for a refined contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern attire.

Georgian paste jewellery must never be submerged in water or liquid cleaners, as moisture can penetrate the closed back and ruin the metallic foil lining. Preserve the piece by wiping the silver and glass surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth and storing it in a dry, lined box away from humidity.
