This antique condiment jar from 1920 reflects an Art Deco style in sterling silver and clear cut glass. The cylindrical vessel incorporates a heavy glass body with a starburst-cut base, an overhead swing handle with visible hallmarks on the curved bail, a hinged lid equipped with a spoon notch, and a polished silver rim showing gentle surface wear consistent with age. Measuring 15 cm high and 7.5 cm wide, the piece operates with a mechanism where pushing the handle down opens the lid. Suitable for display on a sideboard top in an English Country House interior, this tableware item serves practical dining functions while adding a traditional silver and glass accent to the room. The clear glass structure and metallic elements maintain their clean lines, while the automatic opening mechanism remains in working order without chips or cracks in the glass.

A sterling silver and cut glass condiment jar is a specialized tableware vessel produced primarily during the 19th and early 20th centuries to serve preserves, mustard, relishes, or chutney at the dining table.

These jars typically pair a heavy glass or crystal bodyoften decorated with wheel-cut starbursts or faceted patternswith solid sterling silver mounts, including rims, hinged lids, and handles.

Authentic British pieces bear official assay office hallmarks stamped into the silver band or lid, denoting the maker, silver purity standard (such as the lion passant for sterling), city mark, and date letter.

Place the item on a dining sideboard, bar cart, or open kitchen shelving alongside contemporary glass and silver accents to create a layered, curatorial display.

Wash the glass body gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap. Clean the silver components using a specialized silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish without submerging the joint mechanisms.
