This Georgian sterling silver lidded tankard originates from the eighteenth century, crafted in London in 1759 by John King. The reflective silver piece displays a brilliant polished finish with visible highlights, a distinct stepped domed cover, an ornate cast scroll thumbpiece, and a sweeping handle attached to the side. Additional visible features include a central moulded girdle circling the cylindrical body, clear engraved twin crests, and legible hallmarks stamped near the rim and lid. Standing at 18 cm high and weighing 580 grams, the proportion makes it suitable for display upon a sideboard top or as a statement piece in a gentleman's library. Position the tankard within a traditional interior setting to appreciate the historic metalwork and classic form.

Crafted during the reign of King George II (17271760), these silver drinking vessels typically feature tapered cylindrical bodies, stepped domed lids, scroll handles, and heavy cast thumbpieces. Many examples include a moulded mid-rib band around the body to reinforce the structural frame.

These vessels were hand-hammered from sterling silver (925 purity) and constructed by raising sheet silver into a cylindrical form. Components such as the handle, thumbpiece, and hinge were cast separately and soldered into place before being polished and hallmarked.

Authentic pieces feature a complete set of British hallmark strikes, including the makers mark, town mark, sterling lion passant, and date letter. Authentic period pieces also display period-correct wear, hand-engraved armorial crests, and evidence of hand fabrication around seams and joints.

Silver hollowware can be displayed as a standalone decorative focal point on a sideboard, drinks tray, or bookcase shelf. It integrates well into classical dining rooms, home bars, or office desks alongside leather-bound books and brass accessories.

Clean silver using a gentle non-abrasive silver cream and a soft cotton cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip natural oxidisation from detailed recesses. Store the piece in a low-humidity environment inside a tarnish-inhibiting cloth bag when not on display.
